Keyword Density Checker
Paste your text to see the most-used terms and their density. Nothing leaves your browser.
How density is calculated
The tool counts how often each term appears, divides that by the total number of words, and shows the result as a percentage with the most frequent terms first. It runs entirely in your browser, so the text you paste is never uploaded anywhere.
density = times the term appears / total words x 100
When this is worth running
As a diagnostic on a draft that reads oddly, where seeing the same word three times at the top of the list confirms what you suspected. On a competitor's page, when you are trying to work out what they think that page is about. And on your own page when it ranks for the wrong query, to see which term the copy is actually emphasising rather than which one you meant to emphasise.
Why this is a diagnostic and not a target
There is no keyword density that Google rewards. The idea dates from search engines of the late 1990s that really did count terms, and modern ranking systems work on meaning rather than repetition. Writing to hit a percentage produces copy that reads badly, which costs you more than the repetition could ever gain. The honest use is to catch accidental repetition, and to check the page mentions its subject at all, which is a surprisingly common failure in copy written to sound clever.
Questions people ask about keyword density
What keyword density should I aim for?
- None. No published Google guidance names a target and no threshold is enforced. Write for the reader, then use the list to catch words you repeated by accident.
Can repeating a keyword get me penalised?
- Repetition on its own is more likely to be ignored than penalised, but Google's spam policies do name keyword stuffing, and text stuffed with terms reads badly enough to lose the visitor before ranking becomes the issue.
Why does my main keyword show a low percentage?
- Usually because you used synonyms and natural variations, which is what you want. Search engines match meaning, so a page can rank well for a phrase it barely repeats. A low percentage only matters if the term is genuinely absent.
