These figures are estimates based on a published aggregate of organic click-through rates by Google position (Backlinko, 2023). Your real click-through rate depends on your title, the search query, and the rest of the results page.

How the estimate is calculated

The tool multiplies your monthly impressions by the average organic click-through rate for the position you enter. Positions 1 to 10 use a published aggregate of real Google results. Anything on page two is treated as a flat 1.5 percent, and past position 20 as 0.5 percent, because the differences that far down are smaller than the noise in any sample you could realistically collect.

When this is worth running

Three cases. Sizing a keyword before you commit to writing: if position 3 on a 2,000 impression term is worth about 220 clicks a month, you know what the work buys. Forecasting an improvement: moving from position 8 to position 3 is roughly a threefold increase in clicks, which is a more honest argument for the work than a promise of page one. And checking a proposal: an agency quoting traffic that needs a click-through rate far above these numbers is quoting a best case, not an expectation.

Where the number will mislead you

Averages hide the two things that move click-through most. The first is what else is on the result page. An AI Overview, a block of ads, or a featured snippet above you can take a large share of the clicks position 1 would otherwise get. The second is intent. Branded queries run far above these averages because people are looking for you specifically, and broad informational queries run below them because the answer is often already on the result page. Treat the output as an order of magnitude, not a number to put in a forecast.

Questions people ask about click-through rate

Why is my real click-through rate lower than the estimate?

Usually because the result page is crowded. Ads, an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a video carousel or a local pack all sit above the classic links and absorb clicks. The published averages are taken across all result types, so any query with a busy layout will underperform them.

Which average position should I enter?

The one Search Console reports for the page or query over the last 28 days, not the best position you have ever held. Average position is already averaged across every query, device and country the page appeared for, so entering your peak will overstate the result.

Do more clicks improve my ranking?

This is genuinely contested. Google has publicly played down click data as a ranking signal, while documents from the 2023 United States antitrust case described click-based systems in use. What is not contested is that a better title earns more clicks from the position you already hold, which is what this tool measures.
