Direct answer
On-page SEO means making one indexable page the best clear response to one primary user task. Start by deciding who the page is for, what they need to accomplish, what evidence they require, and what the next useful action is. Then align the title, H1, opening answer, sections, examples, links, images, and metadata with that purpose.
Do not begin by counting keywords or forcing a universal character limit. Google can generate title links from several visible and machine-readable sources, and it builds snippets primarily from page content, sometimes using the meta description. A rewritten title or description is not automatically a penalty. It often means Google found another representation more relevant to the query or clearer than the supplied text.
Metadata cannot rescue a page that solves the wrong task, lacks evidence, duplicates another page, or cannot be crawled and indexed. Make the page useful first. Use title and description fields as concise, truthful candidates. Measure query fit and task completion, not whether Google repeats every word you wrote.

"One purpose" does not mean one keyword or one paragraph. It means one coherent job.
A page about diagnosing why a URL is absent from Google may naturally answer:
- is the URL crawlable?
- is it indexable?
- which canonical did Google select?
- is the content worth indexing?
- how can I verify a fix?
Those questions belong together because they support one diagnostic outcome. A pricing comparison, a beginner definition of indexing, and a log-analysis tutorial may deserve separate canonical pages because they serve different tasks.
Before writing, complete this sentence:
After reading this page, the intended reader can ______ using ______ evidence.
If you cannot fill it in precisely, metadata is premature.

Title element, H1, and title link are different things
The HTML <title> element is your proposed browser and search title. The H1 is the primary visible heading. The title link is what Google displays for a result.
Google's title link documentation explains that title links are generated automatically from sources that can include the title element, main visible title, headings, prominent text, anchor text, and other references. Google can change the displayed title when it believes another representation works better for the search and result.
A useful title formula
Combine:
- the exact task or topic;
- the important scope or audience;
- a truthful differentiator.

Should the title and H1 be identical?
They can be, but they do not have to be. The title may need concise context for a search result. The H1 can be more conversational once a person arrives. Both must describe the same page.

Search display is constrained by layout, device, query, language, and the generated result. A tool's character warning is a preview heuristic, not a Google rule. Put important meaning early, remove redundancy, and inspect real display rather than writing to a magic number.
Meta descriptions and snippets
Google's snippet documentation says snippets are primarily created from page content and may use the meta description when it better describes the page.

Google documents nosnippet, max-snippet, and data-nosnippet controls. Restricting snippets can also limit how content is used in some generative search presentations. Use controls only with a clear legal, privacy, licensing, or product requirement. Accidentally applying nosnippet site-wide can remove valuable result context.
Answer-first content without robotic writing
Answer-first means the page resolves the main query near the top, normally within the first 200 words. It does not mean every article begins with the same bland definition.
An effective opening:
- gives the conclusion;
- sets the important boundary;
- tells the reader what to do;
- avoids an autobiography before the answer.
After the answer, explain the model, evidence, procedure, example, caveats, and next action. This creates a readable inverted pyramid while preserving depth.
Short paragraphs can improve scanability, but there is no official paragraph-length ranking rule. Use one idea per paragraph and vary length naturally. A table is useful for comparing repeated fields. A table added only to make the article look comprehensive is noise.
Headings should model the task
Use one descriptive H1. Then build H2 and H3 sections around the sequence a reader follows or the questions they genuinely ask.

The second outline teaches and diagnoses. It also makes sections easier for humans and machines to understand without manufacturing awkward keyword variants.
URLs, canonicals, and ownership
A good URL is stable, readable, and consistent with the page's canonical ownership. Google's SEO Starter Guide recommends descriptive organization and useful content, but the slug alone does not rank a weak page.
Prefer:
- lowercase paths;
- ordinary words;
- stable topic naming;
- a consistent section hierarchy;
- a self-referencing canonical on the chosen page.
Avoid changing a URL just to insert a new keyword. A migration creates redirects, link updates, sitemap work, analytics discontinuity, and failure risk. Change when ownership or usability materially improves.
Images and alternative text
Google's image SEO guidance emphasizes relevant page context, good-quality images, descriptive titles and alt text where appropriate, and accessible implementation.
Write alt text for the image's function in context:
- informative chart: summarize the key relationship;
- diagnostic screenshot: identify the interface and highlighted state;
- linked logo: name the destination or organization appropriately;
- decorative flourish: use empty alt text so assistive technology can skip it.

An internal link should help the current reader continue. Its anchor should describe what is on the destination page.

Do not link every occurrence of "SEO" to the homepage. Do not create circular clusters in which every page links to every other page. Link at the decision point where the next resource resolves a question.
The CTA follows the same rule. A beginner lesson may offer a worksheet. A product evaluation page may offer a waitlist. A troubleshooting page should not interrupt the answer with an unrelated demo pitch.
